How to convert Hard water to Soft water?

Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium ions. During regeneration, a brine solution (saltwater) is flushed through the resin bed. The high concentration of sodium in the brine displaces the calcium and magnesium ions, which are then flushed away, leaving the resin beads recharged with sodium ions.
